It is yellow across the top of the back and black on the bottom. When i came back, they were swarmed on the trimmers, trying to attack it and make it stop running. YO SIGHT WAS KNO HELP!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! I finally went into the house not to continue to agitate it. i live in southern maine, i live on a 3rd floor apartment and today I looked over at on of my windows and from where i was standing about 20 feet away and saw something that almost looked like a worm, i have pretty crappy eyesight so I had to wonder! that has shown up. Very scary looking thing and behavior. Trump had one last story to sell. i saw a black and orange striped wasp but 2 times bigger than a wasp the stinger is at least half an inch long and im scared i have never seen its kind before and cant imagin how big the sting would be and how many times it could sting. I live in Maryland, USA. The top of its body is a brownish color with a prodominant brown circular mark on its back. There was an insect in my bathroom yesterday that looked like a black wasp with red legs and a long stihg, can you help? My best recollection was that it looked much like the Worker black Jacket that you have pictured. They or over 2 inches long. Thanks "Guest". 3-4 inches in length, had red at base if wings and the stinger butt was a beautiful irridescent turqouis. I am in southern MI if that helps. Blurt -- Do you think it could be a Sphex ichneumoneus? DK Stanton. I saw another one of these when I was at my house on my deck and I really want at least a guess on what it was. Any ideas?? there are very large (2 inch) hornets that are flying around. I made that mistake once and regretted it for many weeks. thanks for the reply. I was able to get away without more damage but had to go back for my garden tool. iam trying to id a wasp or hornet. A beneficail insect which rarely stings but I bet you can get it to sting if you started waving your hands frantically. Some of them can be quite large and often resemble hornets or wasps. They're very beautiful and always a treat to see. These guys are really cool. We've seen a few on the ground too that look like they are dying. The stinger is yellow as well. To make insect identification even more confusing, baldfaced hornets are not actually hornets, but wasps (the only true hornets in the U.S. are the European hornets mentioned above). However, what I can tell you is that the best way of finding information on dealing with pest wasps, etc.. is to do a Google search for something like "problem + wasp" or "problem + hornet". http://ww2.lafayette.edu/~hollidac/cicadakillerhome.html, http://ww2.lafayette.edu/~hollidac/CKcontrol.html, http://www.silkmoths.bizland.com/hthysbe.htm, http://bugguide.net/node/view/6610/bgimage, http://ww2.lafayette.edu/~hollidac/helpcicadaresearch.html, http://urbpan.livejournal.com/356702.html, http://www.whatsthatbug.com//sawflies.html, http://www.enature.com/fieldguides/detail.asp?shapeID=1008&curGroupID=4&lgfromWhere=&curPageNum=2, http://www.lesinsectesduquebec.com/insecta/25-hymenoptera/sphecidae.htm, To everyone who has asked for IDs for wasps. They are extremely aggressive and have a low hum that would command respect from anyone who comes near. I was wondering if you could help me identify it. Spazstik2 - Yes, does seem like fairly unusual behaviour. The insect is about two inches long with equally long wings ( also has a set of smaller wings). Here's a link to Professor Chuck Holliday's Cicada Killer page with general info and photos: I am not sure who might know but I am wondering about a wasp of some sort at least I think it is a wasp. We have had a couple of instances of wasps building paper nests under our back porch and if you came too close, one would always zoom out and fly after you. Then photograph during daylight when it comes out but is contained within the bowl. Sandy & Janet -- I'm not too familiar with wasps and hornets in Virginia and Kentucky. The body is black color, with a yellow part of the head. It likes trees, flowers, and may also burrow under the ground. i did get a closer look at one that had landed on the side of the cedar deck, which is when i noticed the white band around the bottom section of the body. Do you have any info on this? I am in Hastings New York. UPDATE: I am an architect and today my daughter and I were SHOCKED to see an enormous wasp that was yellow and black that was eating a very large grasshopper. It was quite sizable and it was solitary, as I didn't spot any for the rest of the time I was mowing. the honey bees seem dazed at first sort of buzzing on their back then after a few seconds they fly away - not back to the tree. Perhaps an in-ground nest getting flooded. They don't sound as though they are a serious problem. Here's a page with info and a couple of photos of Cicada Killers. it is defidently wasp shape. You will here a locust screem and fall to the ground and one of these was will drag it into a hole. Hi Jamie. For the most part, however, bees aren’t what they should be worried about. Amy and Susan - What part of the country are you from. we saw 2 blue bodied bees with orange wings. And for the past three years there has been some kind of wasp/hornet living under my porch. They are very large and look sort of like a cross between a hornet and a horsefly. my room is made of all wood on the inside. They only seem to be out after a heavy rain. Took my daughter fishing here in Ohio. Being a moth, it is harmless and has no sting. im going to try to get a picture of one of them. Thanks!!! I watched it for a bit. Instead, it’s the wasps and hornets who give people the most trouble. What a long 10 minutes that was to endure. Pop in and out several times, then flying around us. I believe it is a large hornet (about 1 1/2 inches long) does not seem agressive, rear part of the body is mostly yellow with black stripes. it is black in colour, has a two part body with a white stripe around the top of the bottom portion of the body. I left the hedge trimmers running when I took off!! We’ve had a number of inquiries about wasps hovering over lawns and other turf areas. hi there, im trying to identy a wasp that is deep golden in colr about an inch or longer ugly looking thing, leaves a big red spot where sting is and leaves a very big red area around it , i veiwed your pics but didnt see anything like it,plz e-mail me if u have pics or send me to a site that may have it , ty very much for your time.debra. Hello James and Jalene - I can't really guess what wasp or hornet you have around your places as there are quite literally hundreds of wasp, hornet and bee species in North America. If it's a sawfly, they aren't aggressive and are harmless. Colonies contain 400 to 700 workers, the largest recorded colony size in its genus, Dolichovespula. Any help would be great...... two days ago I saw in front of me with a screen between us a ? We have paper wasps and were wondering if they origanated from them of if they are all together a different type. Both of these are very strange and I have looked everywhere on the web so anything you can provide is fantastic. The workers have a white tail with a subtle buff line separating the tail from the rest of the abdomen. However, if their nest is located near a structure, control is warranted. Becca -- Did you get a good look at the insect. thank you! Otherwise they normally leave people alone. It's always flying around my door and I want it gone. The insects were not very large, less than an inch and half a gazillion came flying out of the bush at me. Look ups some images on Google Image search. I was recently stung by an insect that was black with a white stripe around the back end. Yesterday at dinner my mom and i noticed a large insect outside out window, it appeared to be a bee. I've been trying to get an picture for you but I can't get close enough to take a viable snapshot without being charged. A thin white band before the waist and a thicker white band after the waist contrast sharply with the rest of the body. I had no idea wasp-like insects were active at night.
