Just because someone says they did a study and here are the findings, it doesn't mean; a) those findings were robust or statically significant, or b) that you can generalize those findings to other phenomena. I happen to live in China, and have a pretty good idea that there have NEVER been three truthful consecutive statements spoken or written in the whole of Chinese history. That isn’t exclusively the case with this book, but there was a fairly high degree of dependence upon the author’s “matrix test” and, to a lesser extent, upon the “dot test” (where, I assume, most of the test participants were college students). From this description of the setup, it was unclear to me if it was reasonable to interpret choosing “right” more often as cheating. I first heard about this book through a friend. VERY helpful and super insightful. This book is a fast read. The part about children, for me, really drove home the Biblical concept of “train up a child in the way he should go.” We have such a duty to our children to model honest and responsible behavior. Nevertheless, the author himself is engaging and he writes in a style as if you were discussing the topic after dinner with a well informed friend. Ariely explains the various studies and results pretty clearly, and it’s definitely not aimed at people who have actually dug into the academic publications: it’s accessible to a layperson, definitely, and to my mind pretty much aimed at the layperson.
